Publisher's Note

I remember as a young kid growing up in a small mid-western town in Massillon, Ohio the impact that at least two teachers had on me. My first-grade teacher Mrs. McCloud would take her class to the high school football stadium to tour the locker room, football field, and to see our mascot, Obie the Tiger, which was a real live tiger. We would then go back to school and draw what we saw. It was at that moment when I decided that I wanted to play football.

My favorite teacher Mrs. Green, who taught both second and third grade, told my parents and I that I could be anything that I wanted to if I put my mind to it. Those words of encouragement stayed with me for a long time and provided me with confidence during challenging and difficult times.

There have been many women that have made a tremendous impact throughout my life, including my own mom who sometimes worked two jobs just to make ends meet, led with kindness, was creative, and always was willing to help others in need.

As I think back to my professional career, most of my mentors in corporate America were women who provided me with valuable insights of how to move up within the company or guided me through an unexpected crisis. Women have been leading since the beginning and have probably changed many more lives than men have throughout history. I’m always excited to see women that I’m personally connected to thrive as executives, artists, teachers, mothers etc. Our FLM contributors are all amazing women that have helped elevate this magazine with their valuable insight and content month after month.

May is our “women’s” issue and I’m ecstatic to feature my friend and multi-talented artist Josephine Lee. May also happens to be Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which is timely for this story. Josephine has and still is doing incredible things in music for our youth, and I highly encourage you to check out her interview. I hope you enjoy FLM May and continue to strive to change the world.
