FLM: Although you’re closer to being a Gen Xer versus Millennial, explain any similarities and/or differences that you’ve noticed when comparing the two generations.
BC: I think both generations are driven to be successful but definitely are different in how to get there. I believe I am still a little old school like my parents where staying loyal to a company, a bank or a brand is normal for me versus I think millennials realize there is no need for that loyalty, they are looking for the better deal. I also find that millennials are way more tech savvy than I and they love social media and are so comfortable with it. I still know what it was like to have to write a letter and mail it using the post office or searching for a book at the library using microfiche and using a land line and payphone…it just gives me a different sense of appreciation of all the things we have now.
FLM: Your partner is a former professional athlete, but still maintains a high profile in Chicago. Describe any expectations or perceptions that people may have of you when it comes to you two being a power couple.
BC: To be fair, the only expectations my partner and I live by, are the ones we place for ourselves and our family. Now, have I experienced moments in which people assume, just because my partner was a former professional athlete, that I must be riding his coattails and living a life of leisure - yes. But make no mistake, my partner and I like to clarify that I am an engineer by trade, I have created my own successes and continue to work hard to build my career so that I can leave a legacy. Leaving a legacy to my kids is the most important thing for me and really is what I consider success.
