Have you ever been told that you look like a movie star? Lucky you! Hollywood’s representation of a woman’s “ideal look” has changed over the last 75 years and mirrors whatever the latest and greatest fitness and health fads dictate. Would hearing, “You look like Jayne Mansfield,” be a compliment by today’s standards? The Hollywood standard by which we measure ourselves is a pendulum swinging far and wide, but it didn’t start with the film industry. The ancient Greeks admired thin women and the Romans liked their women round and robust. Hollywood is just continuing an age-old tradition of perception and expectation.
