Throughout our journey of life we are at all times uniquely evolving, each with a different canvas, creating and displaying the many different aspects of ourselves. In today’s society, a lot of art we display is not only on our walls, but on our bodies too. We have evolved into human canvases of self-expression. From the colors of our hair to tattoos, we are living art.
When we look into our emotional realm of art, we can express ourselves through our feelings. Nowadays we can be much more vibrant with how we look. As a hairdresser I get to see first hand how people like to embrace change and expression through their hair. We are able to put any color of the rainbow in our hair, and trust me I have seen every color done, from all different age groups as well. To me there is something special about a lady in her 70’s prancing down the street with some purple streaks in her hair, and you ask her why~ her answer is, it makes her feel fun.
Whenever I get my hair done, whether it be an exotic color or just a little trim, I feel polished and refreshed; ready to show off to the world! Sometimes I look back through old pictures and can see the different phases I was going through just by looking at my hair. Let’s just say there are some I will never repeat again!
Some take their wearable artistic expression to a more extreme and permanent level by getting tattoos. I am one of these people and I can say I absolutely love mine! Every piece of art I have on my body is unique. Each one does a great job of reflecting who I am, full of color and with much significance.
Tattoos can also hold a great deal of emotional power. The evolution of modern tattoos is incredible. A human with such creative skills to be able to visualize what you imagine and synchronize it with what they create is fascinating to me. Will our grandparent’s generation truly understand why so many of us have gone under the needle to get inked? Probably not. I believe we get body art for ourselves. Tattoos are a display of expression that, when tasteful, can be beautifully appreciated works of art.
As I ponder these thoughts of why we have become so much more expressive, I believe it’s that we are more open to how we feel, and when we express ourselves, it makes us feel good, bold, beautiful and unique. Not everyone has to go to an extreme end with vibrant hair or even tattoos though. What I think is most important is doing something for yourself that makes you feel as if you shine, whether it’s a funky outfit, a piece of jewelry, your hair, tattoos, and much more. Art is a feeling. So go on and express yourself in everything that you do!
