Being proprietary is an increasingly prevalent factor in the fashion world. Articulations of style and image in an intriguing way have absorbed both celebrities and consumers alike. Art and fashion are both strong forms of expressionism, and have recently been combined to create an eye-catching spin to the mystical Birkin bag. One of the most established and successful exhibitions of the transformed Birkin movement took place a little over a year ago, during a benefit event for Project Perpetual (a foundation that raises money for needy children). It was there that artist Jeff Koons was asked to create a series of eight ready-made sculptures featuring celebrity donated Birkin bags to be auctioned off for the foundation. The luxurious pieces went from bags, to true works of art. This event got the ball rolling on the custom pieces, and attracted Birkin owners’ worldwide.
Performer Lady Gaga is credited for the first notable instance of taking a sharpie to a Birkin. She made a statement while flaunting her white leather Hermes piece, covered in Japanese text. At the time, an act like this was unheard of, and sparked global controversy. Some viewed it as a sign of disrespect and rebellion, while others found it inspirational. Nonetheless, it was a boldly artistic statement that couldn’t go unnoticed. Lady Gaga isn’t the only celebrity who’s been known for priding a custom Birkin handbag. Kim Kardashian has also publicized herself in the sought-after exclusivity. Not only does she show off her hand painted Birkin bag by artist George Condo, but she proudly carries a bag painted by none other than her own daughter, North West.
