The presumption of what being a man is has evolved significantly since I was a kid. Machismo played a huge part of what people perceived as to what made a man a man. Some of the most watched movies and TV shows back in the 80’s and 90’s was centered around the tough guy persona. Rocky, Rambo, Terminator, First Blood, and Predator are a few blockbusters that come to mind on the big screen. Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were considered the ultimate brutes in Hollywood while TV shows like Miami Vice, The A Team, and Magnum PI also showcased masculine characters. Getting in touch with your “sensitive” side wasn’t encouraged for boys and self-care was not a thing. Going to work, pumping iron, guzzling beer, eating steak and potatoes, driving fast cars, and chasing women are what people perceived as what men did. Although I didn’t totally fit the bill, there was a lot of truth to that.

Today I embrace the modern male which I think embodies a blend of career-focused ambition and personal style. The modern guy strives to balance professional success and personal fulfillment, enjoying roles that align with their passions and values. Today’s men are much more adaptable and play more of a nurturer role in their families than what their dads did growing up. I know that I’m much more affectionate with my boys than my dad was with me, which I think will allow them to not be afraid to express their feelings as they become men. Modern men are also not afraid to take more risks and explore new opportunities allowing them to grow more personally and professionally.

I think fashion has always been a thing for men, but even more so now. I enjoy watching my teen and tween embrace their own range of styles, although I haven’t completely understood their choice of wardrobe on more than one occasion. In relationships, the modern male values meaningful connections and communicates more openly with their friends, peers, and colleagues. They prioritize their emotions and strive to maintain healthy partnerships that support personal growth and happiness. Gym time is still important, but self-care has become more paramount, with a focus on skincare, and mental well-being to look and feel their best at every stage of life.
