How I Found Beauty in MY Blackness
By Kristen Russell
eing black in America has been a challenging journey to say the least. As a black woman I have found it especially difficult to find acceptance, in both the black and white community. I have very vivid memories of being judged by my peers of both races. In kindergarten, one of my best friends, who happened to be white, said that I was ugly because my skin color was too dark. When I joined a basketball team with my black peers, they claimed I “talked white” and wasn’t black enough.
