DC: Your professional experience and accomplishments are beyond impressive. What three vital attributes contributed to your success?

ADB: Thank you for the kind words. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity that I’ve had to shape some impactful media brands.

I would say the first attribute is curiosity. Media is a terrific industry for any person who wants to know about the world. I’ve been able to meet extraordinary people at the top of their fields and I’ve done deep dives on topics ranging from social issues to fashion to health. My curiosity has allowed me to be engaged and passionate, as I’ve gone from media brand to media brand. The second attribute is passion. You must love what you do to be the best. It’s the only way you’ll devote the amount of time and energy that is required to excel. The third attribute is fearlessness. By that I don’t mean that I don’t experience fear. But I am aware that fear is a sign of growth so I embrace it. You will never be all that you can be—personally or professionally—if you stay within your comfort zone. You have to push yourself and make yourself uncomfortable to grow. As an executive, that has meant taking on huge projects and positions that are beyond what I have done in the past, and pushing past my nerves to realize that I have the skills and I will put in the work to exceed expectations.

DC: There are many dynamic women that are still striving to break the glass ceiling when it comes to business. Describe the challenges you faced moving up the corporate ladder.

ADB: It’s always hard to remember that perception is reality. You always have to control the way your colleagues and chosen industry perceives you. As a woman, particularly a woman of color, this is more challenging because there are already certain stereotypes and misperceptions you should combat to be perceived as an effective leader. In addition, as with many female executives, balancing work and home life can be pretty tough. You need a great support crew and a good system of protocols.

DC: During your illustrious career, you earned many awards. Which award(s) was the most gratifying and why?

ADB: I was extremely honored to receive the Trailblazer award from the New York chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists. I’ve always understood my mother to be a trailblazer and it was wonderful to follow in her footsteps.
