An Inspiration to Women in Film
By Pamela Powell
nce upon a time, women were the key figures in the filmmaking industry. In fact, a majority of writers and directors were women. You see, back in the early 1900‘s, according to the article, “Women in Early Film,” by The National Women’s History Museum, new “hetero-social leisure spaces”, such as movie theaters, were developed to provide opportunities for people to gather and spend their disposable income … income that was typically controlled by wives. Therefore, the content of the films had to be tasteful and safe allowing them to “be legitimated as an art form and social activity.” If women were judging the acceptability, then women were needed to create the content. Women were in high demand … until the 1930’s.
