Fashion has gone to the dogs! Literally.

I’m a fur mom. Three adorable, mischievous and smartly accessorized Basenjis greet me at the door when I get home. Meet Divot, Driver and Dimple. Spoiled? Yes, and appropriately so. Why else would you have a dog? (Insert sarcastic tone) It started with just cute collars. Gold with sparkles goes with Divots amber-red coat. Driver is a dark Brindle color with rich browns, gold tones and a deep black, so naturally he prefers his thick brown fine Corinthian leather collar with silver studs. Of course the baby, Dimple, has to have a pink collar with sparkly bling to match her princess personality. That’s what fashion is all about. Doug in “The Devil Wears Prada” got it right, “Fashion is not about utility. An accessory is merely a piece of iconography used to express individual identity.”

This breed of dog needs to wear a Martingale collar when on the leash because of their slender model-like head, yet another opportunity to accessorize. Why stop there, I get seasonal clothes for myself…why not for my fur kids? We get collars for all seasons, holidays and special occasions.

Take winter time. No one likes to go outside without shoes. I remember when I went online and bought the most adorable booties for Divot so her delicate feet wouldn’t get cold. (By the way, did you know all puppies feet smell like Fritos corn chips?) Anyway, just because I like a certain fashion statement doesn’t necessarily mean my fur-kid will. There was lots of snarling, growling and foot flinging of booties. She looked spastic like when you step in gum and you do that leg jerking thing. Oh well, $27.95 down the drain. But the important thing is to try out new things; you never know when you’ll find something that makes you feel fantastic.

Then, there was that one Halloween. I said, let’s dress up the dogs!!! I thought it was a brilliant idea. What fun. So there they were…my little witch in her doggy cape and witches hat, my pumpkin in his big orange gourd with the stem on his head and the puppy in her pink tutu all froofy and sparkly. Just look at my dogs……LOOK AT MY DOGS! OMG! What have I done? They look so sad. I swear they were cursing me. I couldn’t get them out of those costumes fast enough. They should be on an episode of “What Not to Wear”. Come to think of it, they should not wear a witch’s hat, a stem on their head or a tutu. I can tell you that sometimes less is more when it comes to fashion and DOGS. In fact, they prefer to be naked. Now THAT’S a fashion statement. ~Susan
