With April 15th right around the corner, many of you have already done your taxes, or at least made a plan to do them, or like some, are just starting to let the nagging dread of ‘doing your taxes’ sink in. So, as we dot our i’s and cross the t’s on our IRS forms... does anyone wonder where our money is actually going?
Most people know that a big part of our tax dollars goes to military spending. Since 2001, American taxpayers have spent $10.54 million dollars per hour on war. Yes, you read that correctly, $10.54 MILLION PER HOUR for 14 years!
I’m not saying that we shouldn’t spend money on our military. I am however pointing out that money for our military is consistently our top priority and I’m sure we can all agree that there are many other areas which could really benefit from some of that money. So let’s take a look at where our money is actually going. Let’s consider how the money spent on military funding compares to what is spent on education, science or energy and environment. What about health care? We also have to take into account unemployment and labor, veteran’s benefits, the government, international affairs, transportation, food and agriculture, as well as housing and community.
So, what was the breakdown of government spending in 2013 by category?
