7. Understand the History

It’s irresponsible to visit a place and ignore its history. Even the most picturesque destination is shaped by a complex history. Do the work to learn about what came before your arrival, such as the social structures, legal systems, political struggles, cultural shifts, and ongoing challenges for locals. Understanding the history behind your trip can make your experience more enriching, deepen your empathy, and broaden your perspective on life and the world around you.

8. Seek Out Conversations

It’s tempting to focus entirely on what you will “do” on a trip, such as where you went, what you saw, what you ate, etc. But often, the most lasting memories come from the people you meet. Don’t be afraid to strike up conversations with fellow travelers, hosts, locals in markets or on trains. Even a brief exchange can offer insight, humor, or connection. If you’re open to it, you’ll find that people around the world are often more willing to engage than you might expect.

9. Keep a Journal

You don’t have to write pages of prose each night. But jotting down a few impressions, such as a funny encounter, something you tasted for the first time, or an unexpected observation will help you remember the trip in far greater detail. Memory is slippery, and experiences blend together over time. A journal creates a personal record that no social media post can replicate—something just for you, that you’ll be grateful to revisit years later.
