What are the most common challenges hikers face, and how do you overcome them?
I would personally say hydration and knowing limits are some of the hardest challenges. Also getting lost can happen if you are not prepared. Understanding your location, surroundings & cardinal directions (where does the sunset = west,) and how to read a map are super important.
Why do you love DuPage County for hikes?
DuPage County, because it’s where I live, and it has some beautiful and lengthy trails a short drive away from me.
What are your top breathtaking destinations?
Number one. Grand Canyon. I hiked all the way to the bottom river area while there; it’s truly a sight to take in even from the top! Next is Ayers Rock in Australia. After sleeping in the Outback; we climbed to the top of this national landmark the following day. In 2019 they closed the rock for public access, so my experience feels even more important now! Last but not least, one of my all-time favorites was camping on a random property in Utah that was owned by my teacher during the out West trip. I saw a meteor around midnight so low to the ground that it lit up my surroundings like daylight. (To see the stars, I just slept in a sleeping bag w/o a tent, risky, but worth it for this view!) Seeing the meteor and sparks flying overhead as it burned coming into our atmosphere was a life-changing moment for me. I can still see and hear it in my mind's eye.
My favorite view in DuPage is Mt Hoy in Blackwell Forest Preserve. The elevation really gives a spectacular view of the surroundings.
