Rediscovering Nantucket
Fashion, Shopping, and Where to Stay
BY BRI CLAEYS
s someone who grew up in
Rhode Island and now lives in
Chicago, I find myself longing for
the simplicity and charm of Nantucket Island, especially as the seasons change. Nantucket, just a short ferry ride from Rhode Island, is a favorite destination for my family, particularly during 4th of July, which coincides with my eldest daughter's birthday. This picturesque island never fails to captivate us with its unique blend of preppy and couture fashion, delightful shopping spots, and charming accommodations.
A
Fashion Do’s and Don’ts
Nantucket’s fashion scene is all about balancing preppy classics with modern couture, creating a distinct style that’s both effortless and chic. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Don’t Wear Heels: The island’s cobblestone streets are beautiful but not heel-friendly. Opt for stylish flats or chic loafers instead.
Mix Preppy and Couture: This fashion fusion is quintessential Nantucket. For instance, I once paired a preppy dress from Hill House with Chanel loafers, creating a look that’s both comfortable and sophisticated. Another favorite is combining flip-flops with a Dior bag and a fabulous hat—perfect for a day of shopping or a casual beach stroll.
