ASCONA

Ascona is a jewel-box-like town on the edge of Lake Maggiore. Colorful buildings line the lakefront promenade making it look like a crayon box. It is the lowest lying village in Switzerland. It boasts a Mediterranean ambiance and mild climate full of history, art and culture. The village center called “Borgo” has winding alleyways filled with boutiques and art galleries. Restaurants here range from “grottos” that serve basic local food and drink to Michelin-starred dining experiences. A historical sight to see is the 16th century church of Saint Peter and Paul. A day trip to the Brissago Islands, with botanical gardens growing 1,700 species of plants, is a must see. It gives visitors a chance to get out on the lake with a boat ride to these garden-like islands right smack in the middle of Lake Maggiore.
