keeping skin safe, no

matter what the season, temperature or climate is wearing SPF. “Without SPF the skin is bare and missing key nutrients while being exposed to the sun- which is not good,” explains Dr. Adam Elshafei, a board-certified Internal Medicine Specialist with advanced training in dermatology, and cosmetic anti-aging medicine. Dr. Adam has two practices - Aesthetica Rejuvenation Clinic in Chicago and CosmeSurge in Dubai and works with clients on their unique rejuvenation goals while specializing in both nonsurgical rhinoplasty and non-invasive rejuvenation.

Skin is the bodies’ first layer of protection. Due to the harsh and ever-changing environmental elements, it is essential to develop a new skincare routine with the changing of each season. As snow and frigid temperatures become a thing of the past in the Midwest, Dr. Adam shares what is best for the skin in all types of weather.

-SPF 30 or higher is the best for all skin types. Wear it!

-Vitamin C serum is recommended. By adding it to a daily skincare regime, there will be a difference in hyperpigmentation and visible aging lines on the face. Not a lot is needed, just a few drops.

-Exfoliating is a key part of the process. The oilier the skin, the more you exfoliate in the warmer months. He compares it to a jacket. “You wouldn’t wear a jacket in the summertime heat, so why should your skin wear that jacket of excess oil?”

What many tend to forget is that even during the winter months, where the clouds fill the sky with a subtle gloom, the sun still shines through with UV rays on the skin. While it’s not a lot of exposure there is still the presence of some UV rays and SPF needs to be applied.

Then there’s the environmental changes that affect skin such as direct UV radiation, infra-red radiation, in addition to factors like stress and diet. But Dr. Adam explains the importance of switching up skincare routines for each season.

“Sometimes it’s best to switch up routines as the warm weather vs the dry weather requires different nutrients from the skin. Most products aren’t multipurpose in

the sense that they can and should be used year-round. Some make the skin oilier and are better for the winter while others pull the oil from the skin and are better used in summer.”

When traveling for a vacation, it’s best to prepare for the type of climate you will be in so that your skin can remain healthy and radiant. Dr. Adam advises: “While on vacation it’s always essential to stay hydrated. It’s extremely important yet people often forget because they are away from their everyday routine. Hydration is key to pushing nutrients through the body. “

“Wash your face more often too. In different climates there are different germs to be picked up, and not all new germs are good germs.”

“Definitely study the climate of the area to which you will be visiting. Again, certain products are solely supposed to be used for either summer or winter. Your regular, everyday skincare routine from home might not suit the climate and area you are going to.”
