One of my favorite quotes is, "All who wander are not lost." While there are certainly those who travel to escape the mundane in their lives, there are others who only truly find themselves while on the road, and even more so when they get lost. I fondly recall those times I left the map and tour guidebook at home and just ... wandered. Letting my feet guide me, or the scent of some exotic spice wafting from a kitchen, or a glimpse of the promise of a spectacular sunset. I've always been one to wonder just what is around the next bend. I remember that time I climbed farther up that mountain just to see what more I could see, only to be rewarded with a landscape that took my breath away. I remember that time I got lost in a maze of ramshackle homes in a Philippine seaside village, only to be rescued by giggling young kids that led me back to town.
You don't have to be an adventurer or even go far. One of my favorite things to do is check out different neighborhoods in my incredibly diverse city, Chicago. On any given Saturday, I can explore Little Italy, Chinatown, Ukrainian Village, and so many other enclaves teeming with folks from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America. If you can't manage to get your passport stamped, you can find foreign experiences in your own backyard if you dare or care to seek.
