Some tips…

Iceland is best done with someone, and in small chunks (both in time and destinations). Take advantage of the free stop that Icelandic Air allows, while on your way to another destination (preferably a warm one), to stop for a short stay (three nights/two days is all you need). The Blue Lagoon is conveniently located only a stone’s throw from the airport (BOOK IN ADVANCE). So, you can stop there after your long flight for a soak on your way into Reykjavik, a charming city and great base for your stay (~45 minutes by car from the airport). From there, as much as I typically abhor formal tours, I would recommend booking one to spend a day taking in some of Iceland’s remarkable natural beauty (so much is in close proximity to Reykjavik). That way, you can enjoy protection from the elements in comfort, with quick breaks to take those snapshots that will be the envy of everyone at home.
