external task—it activates what’s known as the Default Mode Network (DMN), particularly within the medial prefrontal cortex. However, rest, in this sense, isn’t about doing nothing; rather, it's about internal thought: daydreaming, reflecting, or planning. Strikingly, the DMN can also be activated during social media scrolling, blurring the line between rest and distraction. Scrolling without active engagement—sometimes labeled as “doom scrolling”—lights up the DMN but leaves us with memory gaps, as minutes and hours dissolve into a haze of passive consumption. For Gen-Z, the inability to process this distinction can amplify anxiety, transforming what should be a restorative break into a source of unease.

Yet, when harnessed intentionally, the DMN is not the enemy. Its activation supports memory consolidation, creativity, self-reflection, and future planning. In this light, boredom isn’t wasted time—it can act as fertile ground for creative breakthroughs and for reigniting old passions. For Gen-Z, allowing themselves to lean into true boredom rather than escape it with constant stimulation could open doors to deeper self-awareness and more authentic productivity.

However, this is not a simple habit to break. Gen-Z stands as the first generation to experience unbroken access to smartphones and social media throughout their formative years, making digital engagement less a choice and more a default mode of existence.

So, when Gen-Z emerges from summer still feeling drained, it isn’t a mark of laziness or lack of willpower. The inability to feel rested is often an unconscious outcome of the digital age, a subtle byproduct of living in a world where true rest must compete with the persistent hum of online life.

Ultimately, the challenge for Gen-Z, and for all of us, is to reclaim downtime as an opportunity for genuine rest and creative growth, rather than surrendering it to the algorithms that shape our habits. By intentionally carving out space for reflection, boredom, and authentic engagement, it is possible to transform summer from a blur of scrolling into a season of renewal and discovery.
