What pushed me to build my own table? The polite, persistent sound of doors being kept shut, even after I was invited in. I reached a point where I realized I was spending more creative energy navigating other people's broken systems than I was on the actual creating. I got tired of hearing no in a myriad of coded language. The final push? It was looking at the next generation of Black and brown creators behind me and knowing that if I, at this level of access, still felt conditional, what were they facing? I wanted to open doors and create opportunities.
