s we enter a new year, we are
greeted by a rise of fresh trends
and the promise of new
beginnings. Yet, we often carry forward remnants of past ideologies—some of which are not as harmless as they seem. Many beauty and lifestyle trends, though presented as simply wishful ways of looking, are in fact superficial constructs that may lead people towards feelings of inadequacy. These trends, rather than encouraging self-expression, often promote depression, anxiety, and, in some cases, more severe mental health issues like body dysmorphia and eating disorders.
A prominent example from 2025 is the Clean Girl Aesthetic, a lifestyle and appearance standard that quickly became idolized. This trend emphasizes clear skin, flawless hair, seemingly effortless makeup, and a meticulously coordinated wardrobe. While this aesthetic may seem aspirational on the surface, it sets an unattainable standard for many, making those who don’t fit the mold feel insecure and self-conscious. The pressure to conform can become overwhelming, especially when comparisons are drawn to others who may be carefully curating or even staging their lives for social media.
