this is the first time in the history of the Critics’ Choice awards to have a tie in any category let alone two.

Not surprisingly, at least from this critic’s perspective, particularly looking at the results of the Golden Globes, the biggest winner of the night was “Roma,” taking home 4 wins for Best Picture, Best Foreign Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematographer. Talking with writer/director/cinematographer Alfonso Cuaron before the event, I wished him luck but qualified this by saying he wouldn’t need it. Quite humbly, Cuaron smiled and said he always needs luck and genuinely appeared to appreciate my good wishes. Lady Luck was certainly smiling on him tonight. Both “Vice” and “Black Panther” garnered 3 awards which should push the momentum of all of these films a little closer to an Oscar nomination. “First Man” and “A Star Is Born” haven’t received much love and given that the Critics’ Choice Awards are safe predictors for Oscar nominations, their future doesn’t bode well.

It seems a sure bet that “Roma” will receive multiple Academy Award nominations along with “Vice” and “Black Panther,” but it would be great to see a little more recognition for films like “Wildlife,” “Blindspotting,” and “First Reformed” as well as women in the director’s chair like Marielle Heller for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”or Debra Granik for “Leave No Trace.” This would certainly indicate the voting body truly does “see her.”
