Potluck style gatherings are another party tradition which reduce both the pressure and expense of hosting an event. Once a convenient time and location are agreed upon, everyone who can attend brings something to share. For those among us who are less adept in culinary arts, the option to bring non food necessities like serving supplies, decorations, or even a game to play encourages inclusion of everyone. You can still introduce the element of surprise by dedicating the fete to a particular person or cause such as our annual “Pink Party” to celebrate the life of a cancer survivor and raise funds to benefit an organization like the Avon Walk.

Selecting the location is another logistic which prevents people from gathering, since not everyone has a home they are comfortable with entertaining in. Start discovering local businesses like the art party studio, restaurants with private rooms, and even activity venues like trampoline gyms. Book those less popular days and dates such as a weeknight in late January to make your fete happen. My kids and I took their amazing and physically fit father to a rock climbing gym for a family session to demonstrate our appreciation for all that he does. Spur of the moment gatherings can be the best kind, so I hope 2016 brings you opportunities to creatively celebrate. Happy New Year!
