My challenge to you, whether you’re the party planner, or the freebird of the group, is to stretch your spontaneous legs this year. And don’t just take it from me. Numerous studies have pointed to spontaneity as resulting in some health benefits that may surprise you. Not only are you likely to be happier and less stressed by exercising your ability to be spontaneous, but research has shown it can lead to improved memory, increased creativity, boosted confidence and by inherent increases in the amount you laugh, it has even been suggested to aid in improving the immune system.

There’s a time and a place for invites and fine China, and there’s a time and a place for rolling with the punches. Do yourself a favor and leave space for both in your life this year.

If you receive a last minute invite to something that sounds cool to you, don’t get caught up in overanalyzing. Don’t worry about why you didn’t get invited earlier or with the rest of the group, for example. Don’t worry about what you might fall behind on that day, or the next, if you go - just do it. Worst case: you don’t have that much fun and you know for next time. Best case: it could be your best memory of the year. And be careful not to spend so much time planning the party that you run out of time to dance like nobody's watching. Let 2016 be your year of unexpected adventure and sweet surprise.
