4. Be kind to yourself. Life is complicated. We all have bad days, setbacks, and feelings of being lost. When you’re feeling beaten up, find something that will ease the mind, body, and soul, and set you straight. We need to find ways to empower ourselves through kindness and understanding, leaving ourselves intact and able to get closer and closer to the finish line.

5. Connect with people. Nourish your soul by connecting and sharing your life with family and friends. Take some time every day to connect with an old friend, or strike up a conversation with a stranger. Some say I am overly friendly, that I will talk to just about anybody wherever I am. I believe everyone has a story, and sometimes even simple interactions—a smile or a simple act of kindness—can make a difference in both their life and in mine.

Whatever you are seeking to accomplish this year—be it a healthier lifestyle, saving more money, starting your own business, or changing careers—find what will keep you motivated. Find whatever it is that will keep you on the path to making that change a reality.

To live the life you want, you must be an active participant. You must believe that you have the internal strength to make that life possible. When I recite my running motto, I am really saying to myself: I have prepared. I have the inner strength to overcome anything that comes my way. I believe in me, and nothing can keep me from finishing what I have set out to achieve.
