Many a time I have been lectured about spending more time on my screen. Teachers take the devices and keep them in a caddy right in front of our faces while they go on with their lessons. It is no shortcoming from the schools, but in a world where dangers such as school shootings, and dare I say Immigration and Customs Enforcement–or ICE, are such prominent figures, fear lingers in the corners of everyone's minds, not just for the want of our phones, but for the safety that may be put at stake without them. Yet another thing I don’t believe adults understand. They will claim that we have no idea of how the world actually works, but we do. It’s laid out for us, concealed and glazed over by laughable and relatable content in which it’s been squished between. But I know how many deaths have occurred in Iran, how many raped in Sudan, how many US citizens wrongly deported. This is all knowledge from the phone supposedly ruining my life. None of this is to lay failing in my parents or in that of any others, or even any of you. My argument is simply that I know too much. In 2040 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish, climate change is irreversible in four or five years, 16,000 animals are on the endangered species list and frankly, there’s not much I–or anyone around me can do about it. All is to say that I’m very active in the world around me and all the time spent on my ‘damn phone’ may actually be knowledge obtained. Now, I’m not aware of the reach of my classmates' knowledge but I’ll say it’s entirely unavoidable to learn something from all the knowledge we intake daily–whether it’s forgotten in our archives or use in our minds. I’ll admit, my predominant goal whilst on my phone isn’t to learn about the world, but it does ultimately happen.
