Go somewhere new
Get out of your comfort zone; do something unexpected. Exposing yourself to a new community or setting allows you to explore new interests and talents.
Attending college in Texas where I didn’t know anyone was the best thing I ever did. I could be anyone I wanted and definitely tried it all- music, sorority, student government, design association…most of all, I wasn’t just a younger sister.
Get involved
Don’t just join; do something that matters.
Volunteer for an organization and really dig in. You may always be tagged for the decorating committee, but what if you volunteered to manage a budget or solicit sponsorships? You may be a natural business developer! (Heck, you may end up leading global business development for a hospitality design firm with a team in Asia & the Middle East.)
Take on incrementally more significant roles and responsibilities to stretch your bandwidth as a contributor. These skills translate between philanthropic and personal and professional roles relatively seamlessly. Get comfortable leading committees; extend your natural skillset and learn something new.
