My youngest told me that he was reading two books for Black History Month in his 5th grade class. The first book was about Jackie Robinson and the second about Muhammad Ali. I quizzed him on what he learned, and he provided me with some good facts beyond the two just being great athletes, but there was still more for him to discover. I asked him to re-read and research their stories and come back with more details about their lives and why they were important to American History. Based on what they did and what they stood for I explained that both Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali were an inspiration to ALL types of people not just black folks. The importance for him to not skim over all of which they accomplished will allow him to delve deeper into Black History and understand more than just the basic facts from what I was taught as a kid. We often have conversations about race, ethnicity, and culture, and I love hearing our kids’ perspectives on such topics. We encourage them to recognize and learn about the differences they see in others and explore them more if appropriate

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of negativities surrounding wokeness. I guess the thought of calling out things that is no longer deemed acceptable has gone too far for some. I view wokeness as awareness and we should not waiver from holding people accountable for harmful behavior that was once considered to be acceptable. Those that have no interest in truly understanding and learning others different from them do not really value diversity. And that’s sad. My hope is that one day we will get to the point where the term “wokeness” is no longer necessary because everyone will already be awake. It’s going to take some time to get there, but I think my kids’ generation is headed towards that path. Enjoy FLM February and this month let’s celebrate all our differences. Together.
