Kimia,”

she said as we sat there interpreting our own perspective of what that meant individually in our minds.

I responded, “ Oh yeah I understand.” I fully felt what she meant in that moment when she looked up with a heaviness in her heart.

As we sat there a few moments digesting what this meant, Kat said, “You know I thought I was woke but I really wasn’t. It wasn’t until 2020 when I realized what woke fully meant.”

I was surprised as I looked back at the knowledgeable, wise black woman before me. I loved the humility in her voice and her ability to admit that. Many would not have the aptitude to embrace that.

Kat elaborated and went on… “You see, it wasn’t for a while before I knew I was the one in my family that needed to undo generational curses.”

I

“Hey Kat,” I interjected. “Don’t you feel that the term generational curse is used loosely in conversation these days. Can you tell me what you found in your own life to escape that bondage of ongoing detriments?”

We watched her son scurry around us and even in his playful presence his manners were noticeably better than most children his age. Kat asked him questions about his dog and he responded yes ma’am and okay mom with no residual attitude.

Kat responded, “I make sure my children feel real life and I affirm it all the time. That’s something I had trouble with growing up. Not having that loving reassurance was a part of the generational curses I knew I was breaking."

I look back at Kat and her son and they have an unspoken bond that is a little bit stronger than most. There was no front or fabrication of emotions. Kat knew her son’s every move and she knew his.

she knew his.

Aside from her growing family she had a college degree and had opened a surplus of businesses. Although she didn’t have a blueprint of how to run her own business, she had a vision and a dream to fully invest in the life she wanted to have. Today Kat owns a juice bar alongside many other businesses such as a dance studio, a fitness studio, and continues to create more wellness concepts. Kat knew that a life of generational curses was in her past . The vision Kat had was to create the world the way she wanted to see it and a new environment to emulate that.

Breaking chains of imbalanced circumstance is hard, however by looking at what the past has provided makes it all the more reason to make the proper adjustments for our future.
