February has arrived and that means it’s Black History Month. Some of you may be wondering why we didn’t feature a photo of one our famous black icons on the cover to signify the celebration, but the reality is that we try to recognize and celebrate African Americans every month and this issue is no different. That said, our theme for this month is “realness” or “reality” and since we have all been experiencing a dose of both since the pandemic hit, I thought the topic would be appropriate.

I correlate “realness” with being authentic. I know the word “authentic” gets tossed around a lot these days, especially in the marketing world, but true authenticity to me is more than just being original. It is a consistent realness of who you are in all aspects of your life. I can recognize someone who is full s%#t a mile away and as I get older, my bulls%#t detector has become better and more accurate! I love being around folks who are unapologetic about who they are…in a good way. People that are honest without being rude, funny without being crass, and sincere without being fake are the ones I most identify with. In the world of Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Tik Tok, along with the number of views and likes folks are focused on, I think realness is a rarity these days.

This month may be our best issue yet. Our cover story features Meredith Marks, a personal friend of mine who happens to be the breakout star for the Bravo hit series The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. She is a wife, mother, and businesswoman, but I am most impressed by her realness. Hopefully, you will find her story empowering and inspiring as well. Our other contributor stories cover a wide range of topics such as beauty, health, self-development, and entertainment. They are truthful, thoughtful, sincere, honest, and genuine, but most of all they’re real. I hope this issue adds a little more positivity to what you already have in your life. Enjoy!
