The last few weeks has many of us reflecting about our lives and our relationships that we have with others. The stunning news about Kobe Bryant’s death along with and his daughter Gianna and several others shook everyone to their core. How could something happen to such wonderful people that had so much to live for? Those kinds of questions we will never get the answer to, but whenever something does happen as tragic as what we witnessed a few weeks ago, we are reminded how short life truly is and why we should make the best of our time while here on this planet.

The older I get the more I realize how important it is to connect with people on all levels. February is Black History month, but over the years it feels like the luster has been lost on honoring African American heritage and highlighting the contributions that black people have provided, not only in America, but from around the world. This month is a perfect time to connect with one another to seek understanding and also to be understood. With the corruptness, dirtiness and lowliness of politics that is happening right now in America, we should be attempting to build and/or rebuild relationships with those that that think, look, and act differently from us. Discrimination, racism, and bigotry result from those that are uneducated about other races and other cultures. Until we collectively work together to eliminate those type of things, then they will continue to exist, and people will continue to hurt.''

My challenge to you is to develop a relationship with someone from a different culture or background that may be able to provide more insight into a differing view that you may have. You may end up looking at your opinion a little differently, or you may just decide to agree to disagree. But whatever the end result, at least you will have become more aware and sought to be educated about someone or something that you didn’t know before. Remember, our time here is limited and we never know what the next day or even hour will bring. You don’t have to be a Kobe Bryant in order to make an impact on others around you. If we focus on doing good, then all will be good. Let’s make it a great rest of the year.
