Are We Teaching Our Kids to Be Racists?
By D.C. Crenshaw
bout 5 years ago I picked up my oldest son Tru from his Montessori preschool. As we were driving home, like most kids do, he asked me an interesting question out of the blue. “Daddy, why are all of the black guys bad?” Needless to say, I was stunned by this question. As my heart dropped out of my chest onto the car floor I replied, “What???!!” But, because I wanted to understand his thought process, I kept my composure, decided not to panic so I could delve a little deeper and then asked, “Well, Tru, why do you think that all the black guys are bad?” He then explained, “You know in the movies? Most of the bad guys are always wearing black. Why is that?” Immediately I knew that he wasn’t thinking what I thought he was thinking.
