As my kids grow up and step into their teenage years, I’m noticing a shift in how we approach the holidays. What was once a plethora of wrapped gifts under the tree has turned into something more meaningful: the pursuit of shared experiences. This year, for the first time, my teenage boys would rather take a trip somewhere in the world than wake up to a pile of presents. Looking back, they don’t really remember the toys and gadgets they received when they were much younger. What stands out most are the traditions we had—like Christmas brunch we hosted with our neighbors, where my famous waffles was their favorite.

It’s disappointing how commercialized the holidays have become. Christmas items start appearing in stores as early as July, making it feel more like an opportunity to make a profit versus a season to enjoy. I miss the days when we waited patiently for Thanksgiving to pass before diving into Christmas stuff. Back then, writing out gift lists, hanging ornaments, and counting down the days felt magical. My parents would give my sister and I $100 each to go shopping at the mall. Not quite sure what one hundred bucks could buy you today, but for us, it was awesome! While early holiday sales allows us to save a buck, they kind of eliminated the anticipation that once made the season so special.

Still, I love seeing my boys evolve in their understanding of what truly matters. For now, their focus isn’t on material things but on meaningful connections and new adventures. This perspective has prompted me to reflect on how we can make this season brighter for others. Not everyone is less fortunate in a financial sense—some may be battling loneliness, illness, or depression. A small act of kindness can make a world of difference. See if you can make a difference this year somewhere, somehow.

As we close out the year, let’s celebrate the holidays with thankfulness and generosity. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and a joyous New Year to all of you. May the season bring warmth, love, and a reminder of the beauty in life’s simplest joys.
