Pandemic Holidays

For many families, the holidays are a mixed bag. From happy yuletide traditions that we look forward to all year, to dreadful gatherings, loneliness and bitter disappoint that leave us merely grateful we survived another season; the holidays mean something different to everyone. Some people love the festivities of the holidays and others wish they could bury their heads in the sand only to return in January when all the fuss is over. And that’s a normal year.

But this is no normal year. 2020 has been the year of a lot of fake news and one very real pandemic. To maintain sanity and some semblance of normalcy (and safety), families looking to celebrate Christmas are being forced to pivot and some are starting earlier than ever to find the festive in the face of uncertainty. In normal times, the holidays can mean overspending, overeating, oversharing, overindulging, and overdecorating. This year you might see fewer folks around your tree, but that does not mean you can’t have an amazing holiday – however you define amazing. For me, it is with gratitude that I acknowledge my privilege of being able to decorate a tree in the heated home I share with a loved one. I am healthy, able bodied, have a roof over my head and my biggest decision was what color ornaments to use on our tree. I am ready to begin celebrating now for the promise of a better year to come.

May the worst days be behind us …
