This month we’re not only celebrating the holidays, but a major milestone; the release of our 60th issue. As we neared completion, I couldn’t help but to remember growing up in my small town in Ohio and seeing certain things as a kid that would signify the arrival of the holidays, such as Christmas tree lights, downtown street poles being decorated with red ribbon and stockings, and the emergence of a little red house where we would go to visit Santa. There was something special about those times back then when Christmas seemed less commercial and more authentic. Everyone looked forward to working less and spending more time with family and friends. The traditional holiday shows came on like A Charlie Brown Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. I tried to get my kids to watch those shows, but they’ve been replaced by Home Alone, Elf, and The Grinch That Stole Christmas. All great movies, but there’s still something special about watching Snoopy, Linus, and Lucy go at it. Of course, time moves on and things change, and you eventually create new traditions, however the memories and nostalgia of the olden days will always remain.
One thing that never changes is the gift list that you create to buy loved ones. The process has gotten easier due to technology, but we still rely on word of mouth, expert advice, and a little bit of advertising to help us with those buying decisions. Fortunately, in this month’s Holiday issue we have compiled a few gift guides to assist with your efforts from stocking stuffers for adults to food related presents for kids.
I also know the holidays are not always fun for everyone. Although it’s touted as the season of joy, many of us may not have much to celebrate. If you can help someone turn a frown upside down this holiday season, then I think that may just be about the best present anyone can receive. We here at FLM wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and a Happy and Healthy New Year. See you in 2020!
