Around this time of year, it seems we hear a lot more of the phrase, “this time of year” or “tis the season”. Across the globe, many cultures ready themselves for celebrations with family, friends, at work or in the places we worship. Some enter the season with anticipation and glee, while others approach with dread or regret. The reasons vary from the typical to the deeply personal. What occurred to me, however, is very few of us seem to approach the holiday season with a sense of choice. There are parties we must attend, traditions we must upkeep and fellows who must be given gifts. Some of us need to ask the question why?

We hear more and more these days of the sentiment to leave behind that which no longer serves us. Yet, during the holidays, we leave that saying behind and climb aboard the train of duty. Duty to spend, to attend, to indulge, to decorate. If you, like so many of us, are similarly situated on this holiday train of obligation, we hope you remember that generosity (of time, spirit and purse) sometimes comes at the price of your health and wellbeing. So I say, tis the season to be a tiny bit selfish with your time, energy, pocket and presence. Perhaps say yes to one less party, place a limit on spending frivolously and, if you haven't already, start your daily gratitude practice. Showing up as your whole self to each aspect of your life allows you to be more generous to others in their life. So even if you still get stuck in duty mode, try to find the good in each obligation so that rather than endure the season, you might actually find joy.
