How Can We Prolong the Holiday Spirit?
My favorite thing about this time of year is the season’s ability to bring out the good spirit that lives inside most people. It’s inherently a time we’re reminded of the things we hold most dear, namely, our loved ones. And as such, it’s also a time we think of those who aren’t as fortunate as us.
Certainly it’s true that for those without a family, a home, or food to eat, the holiday season can serve as a rather painful reminder, instead of a time of joy. Each year I see people reaching out and doing amazing things in an effort to help relieve some of that pain.
Recently Hurricane Otto made landfall for the first time in history here in Costa Rica. While most of the country weathered the storm quite well, a handful of communities weren’t so lucky. Particularly, a community called Upala, where nearly 48,000 people have lost everything. In the face of any tragedy, there is the opportunity to witness the silver lining. That good inside people that just starts radiating from even the most unexpected places. People here have banded together in solidarity and vowed to do whatever they possibly can to help this community.
