1. Enough is enough with the overbuying.
Gift-giving seems to become more expensive and more stressful ever year for people. And for what? To keep up with the Jones’?
There is a certain sentiment in a thoughtful, unique gift. I’m not suggesting banning gift giving. But maybe you also consider the idea of a recycled gift exchange. Most of us have something in our house that we’ve rarely used, but that’s in great shape. Can you think of someone you know that might get better use out of it? Gift it to them!
Mixing things up a bit, experiences tend to trump material things. A group of friends could opt for a spa day together or going to a concert rather than buying each other gifts.
2. Consider an organic, locally grown holiday meal.
Every health and fitness blog I follow has been filling my inbox and newsfeed with ways to “stay on track” this holiday season. If the big holiday meals are really setting the family back in terms of health and fitness goals and in turn causing stress, why not make a change?
Make an event of it, a sort of challenge, to make your family’s big holiday meal from all organic and locally grown products. Take the kids to a local Farmer’s Market or even a local farm if you have access, and send them on a scavenger hunt to find the ingredients needed. It might be a first for your whole family and a way for everyone to discover together how you can make delicious food with high quality ingredients. The quality family time spent pulling it all together is a bonus.
