Transition.
It’s a simple word, but it can carry a lot of weight.
Transition can be good, bad, indifferent or temporary. It can be something we welcome or something we resist.
Sometimes it’s planned; other times, it shows up unannounced. And depending on how we choose to look at it, transition can feel like the glass is half full or half empty.
Change can be difficult. It can be stressful, uncomfortable and, at times, simply overwhelming. We experience it when we move, change careers, enter or leave relationships, face changes in our health, or say goodbye to someone we love. But change can also be exciting. It can open doors we didn’t know existed and take us places we never imagined going.
I’m personally experiencing a bit of transition right now.
As a parent, I’m standing at one of those moments that you know is coming, but somehow never feels quite real until it arrives. I’ll soon be dropping one son off at college, while my other has already started his freshman year of high school.
One son is moving out. The other is moving up.
And with that comes a new level of independence for both of them. They need me a little less. They’re making more decisions on their own, finding their own voices and beginning to chart their own paths.
I’m incredibly excited to watch them soar, but I’d be lying if I said there isn’t a little sadness mixed in.
IAs parents, we spend years teaching, guiding, protecting, encouraging and, yes, sometimes worrying. We invest so much of ourselves into helping our children become independent, confident and capable adults. The goal was never to keep them in the nest. The goal was to prepare them to leave it, and eventually build a successful life of their own.
I believe transition is necessary for growth.
That doesn’t mean every change is easy, but even difficult transitions can teach us something about ourselves.
Sometimes growth comes from making one small adjustment. Trying something new. Having a different conversation.
Small changes can move us forward in ways we never anticipated.
This month, our cover story features someone who, in many ways, embodies change.
Adam Amin has built a remarkable career navigating transitions. By day, he’s a nationally recognized sports broadcaster. But when the broadcast ends, the headphones don’t necessarily come off. He transitions from the booth to the DJ booth, bringing an entirely different energy to the room.
Different worlds. Different audiences. Different skill sets.
Same person.
Maybe you’re starting something new. Maybe you’re letting go of something old. Maybe you’re somewhere in between, trying to figure out what comes next.
Whatever your transition looks like, embrace it.
Look for the opportunity in it.
And when you’re trying to decide whether that glass is half full or half empty, remember, you can always pour a little more into it.
Here’s to the next chapter, whatever it may bring.
