It’s with a heavy heart that I publish this month’s issue. On August 8th, 2016 at 7:15 AM I lost my mother, Shirley J. Crenshaw. She was the first hero in my life and now she’s gone. She was a kind, generous, creative, loving, caring, supportive, and funny woman and it only seems appropriate that this month’s “Heroes” issue is dedicated to her.
Heroes are subjective, because everyone has a different definition of what makes someone heroic in their eyes. However, the one common factor that most heroes share is their ability to inspire others. We tend to categorize them as it relates to sports, entertainment, politics, or even activism, but it’s the everyday person making a difference in others’ lives that is the driving force behind making our world a better place. Think about a teacher, coach, mentor, or parent that motivated you to be a better person and encouraged you to pursue your dreams. They often overcome unbelievable obstacles and are able to defy incredible odds that would have stopped the average person in their tracks. Heroes never give up and always find a way to make things better for themselves and others. Many have dedicated or lost their lives to protect others.
Our August issue shines a spotlight on a couple of familiar faces, but most are people that you probably never heard of that includes Olympians and a Paralympian. They are all amazing individuals that should be recognized as heroes. We are excited to honor them. On a lighter note, we provide tips on beauty, personal growth, and a humorous take on Hollywood as it correlates to finding Mr. Right. I really hope that you enjoy this special issue as we highlight some very special people. R.I.P. mom.
