Some Things Should Never Go Out of Style
BY HEATHER REID
ecently, I’ve
found respite
from the
dumpster fire that is our current political reality by snuggling under my favorite fluffy white blanket and binge-watching The West Wing. For the uninitiated, this classic TV series ran from 1999 to 2007 and follows a dedicated, brilliant group of White House politicians and staff serving Democratic President Jed Bartlet.
The politics of that era feel almost bucolic now. There are some straight-out-of-central-casting villainous Republicans and the occasional over-the-top liberal caricature, but for the most part, these public servants work—fervently, imperfectly, but earnestly—to serve the people of the United States.
And among them, no one shaped my vision of how a career woman should carry herself quite like White House Press Secretary CJ Cregg.
As this is the Fashion Issue, let’s start there.
