heals us. It is the masks made in China combined with South Korea’s tracing technology and the testing kits used by Singapore which might eventually save American lives and our economy. That our nights can be used to learn new languages, play the guitar, or pick up candle-making, rather than watching fellow humans on reality shows make train wrecks of their lives. That leadership means so much more than power – it embodies the ability to unite groups of people with different ideals into a shared vision. And that our salvation lies, purely and simply, in our ability to hold one another, laugh together, and rejoice in the splendor of community.

When this has all passed, and it will pass, perhaps we will remember these lessons in humility. Perhaps we will usher in a new era of global connectivity and understanding. Perhaps we will abandon “America First,” accepting that framework as incompatible with the realities – both dire and hopeful – of the world in which we thrive. Perhaps, we will live, die, and blossom with the knowledge that we are all human beings. Children of the same deity. Descendants of the same ancestors.

In that meaning there is great liberation. And it is ours for the taking.
