Wearing the right sandal is a bit tricky. Ask yourself-“will I be walking on sand or chasing kids around a pool?”- then stay low; “cocktailing with the girl friends on a rooftop pool in Miami?”- the higher the better to extend your legs. If you’re like me, you’ll want to look great, enjoy your family and not break an ankle (or spill a cocktail)- so pick something in between: waterproof with a slight heel. Whatever you choose, when someone spontaneously stops by to offer you a ride on their boat- always take your shoes off. It’s just good boat etiquette.
Another thing to consider: jewelry. We all have those friends who still have their fabulous watches and endless bracelets or necklaces on with their swimwear. They have that “I may be at the pool but have no intention of getting in the pool” look. That’s fine with the "high-heels-at-the-rooftop-pool” scenario but back in reality (where most of us live most of the time), wear a couple of simple accessories like a cuff bracelet and a “utility” set of hoop earrings- things you can easily toss into your classic straw beach bag or the boat cup holder when you get summoned to partake in the family wacky dive contest- or you just need to hop in the lake after driving everyone tubing for the entire afternoon. Either way, be sure you aren’t wearing your best stuff in the event your priceless earring ends up at the bottom of the pool or lost at the bottom of your beach bag with the seashells.
Nobody said looking effortless was truly effortless, but a foundation of classic essentials will help anyone look effortlessly pulled together to create the perfect backdrop for priceless memory making.
