Allan Leonard Lewis fought and died in the First World War. He was 23
and had left his family home in Whitney and Wye like thousands of other
Herefordshire lads to fight in the war. But Allan was the only one to win a
Victoria Cross, for bravery in action.
Other than his name on the War Memorials in Whitney on Wye and
nearby Brilley Allan was a forgotten hero until his great niece Dawn Lewis
launched a campaign to raise the money for a statue. Now, Allan stands
guard at the entrance to Hereford’s Old Market, a poignant reminder to
thousands of shoppers that he was one of the bravest of the brave. Fittingly,
it was unveiled as the country marks the Centenary of the end of the First
World War.
Lance Corporal Lewis VC was killed in action bravely leading his men
in the final push to break the German Hindenburg line. He has no known
grave, but his name is on the Vis-en- Artois memorial in France. His parents
received his VC medal from King George V at Buckingham Palace. A plaque
has also been dedicated in Hereford Cathedral on behalf of the nation he
helped to save 100 years ago.

TERRIFIC TAIWAN
21 year old Samantha-
Marie
Price tells
Festive News of her
great adventure.
I was selected as a
representative
for
Herefordshire in a
Girlguiding Midlands
adventure to Taiwan in the summer, but first I had
to raise £2,500, a goal achieved from fund raising
events I organised and generous donations from
local businesses and organisations.
There were 18 of us on the trip plus our leaders
and we got to know each other in a series of
interesting activities before we left for Taiwan.
Our guides Wendy and Angel were at Taipei
Airport to meet us before travelling to Hou-li in
the Taichung District. At the Hyseovege church
we met our hosts James and Manwife and the
children, many of them living in poverty , we
would share fun activities with them. Teaching
the children new skills was a key part of the visit
and they were excited to be around English people
they had never met. We improved a farm so they
could start growing their own food and built a
stage for them to use at musical performances.
I made deep connections with the children and
it was very emotional goodbyes when it was time
to come home. My thanks to all those whose
generous donations allowed me to experience and
contribute to life in a far -away country. My
special thanks to Herefordable Carpets and the
Lions.
Editor’s note: Hereford Lions Club, through its
youth development programme believes our
young people can benefit greatly from their
experiences on oversea travel and working to
make improvements in poorer nations. The
club was pleased to support Samantha-Marie.
