BELMONT LEADS THE WAY
Lindsey Evans chats to some of the coffee crowd.
The Herefordshire based Teddy Trust offers a good home to unwanted
teddies – and other soft. cuddly animals.
The charity has
already this year sent
over 20,000 overseas
for children suffering
the traumas of war,
poverty or abuse. We
all know from our
own experience the
comfort children get
from cuddling a
teddy.
Maybe your own
children have grown
up and no longer
want their teddy . So
why not give it to the
Teddy Trust to bring
a little bit of
happiness into the life
of a child desperately in need of some love.

The thriving Belmont Centre is a great example of how to reduce loneliness in a community.
As announced on the front page of
Festive News, Hereford Lions Club is
offering grants to assist local voluntary
organisations to become involved and to
show how it can be achieved we
dropped in on a regular coffee morning
at Belmont.
Organiser Lindsey Evans explained
there is a coffee morning every Friday
and lunch clubs on the second
Wednesday of the month and one on the
last Friday. But the centre, which
includes a library is a non-stop hive of
activity, catering for pensioners to tiny
tots The list is endless: Yoga, bingo ,
craft club, first aid courses, choir
practice, tots play groups and even
Kung Fu and Karate classes for the more
adventurous . It’s the perfect place to
make new friends.
Said Lindsey, “We are a multi-purpose
organisation run entirely by volunteers
and welcoming everyone to join in, but
we do recognise there will be some in the
community for whom loneliness is a big
issue and it is to these that we reach out
and invite them to come along to a coffee
morning or lunch. They will be welcomed
and quickly meet new friends.”
Said 83 year old Sheila Salt, a regular
who makes a point of chatting to new
visitors, “The coffee mornings are
wonderful social occasions and a great
opportunity to meet lots of people you
might not otherwise get to know.”
Festive News believes Belmont
centre volunteers are on the right track
and setting a perfect example for other
would-be groups to follow, with the
financial support of Lions Club.
