PARTY TIME FOR SENIORS
PAGE 28 • FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2014
Hereford Lions Club
has introduced a series
of tea parties and
entertainment for the
cities old folk, the first
one in November was
held at the Kyrle Pope
Residential Centre in
Tupsley where some
thirty pensioners sat
down to a sumptuous
tea. Entertainment was
provided by Brian
‘Banjo’ Turner who
took the guests down a
memory lane of songs
from the old days.
SEE IN THE NEW YEAR WITH THE LIONS
Its reckoned to be the best New Year’s Eve party in town – and certainly offers the best value for
money. And after many years staging the party Hereford Lions know how to give their guests a good
time. Whats more the price is right. Tickets for the black tie do cost £65 a head, but other than a taxi
fare that’s all the cash you will need. For as well as a five course meal by Ascari’s, quality party hats
and novelties, chocolates, lots of balloons, good music for dancing …. all the drinks and wines are
included in the price!! Beat that! No wonder it’s a sell out each year, ensuring a bumper contribution
to the Lions charity fund.. Contact Keith Martin on 01432 358362 for more information.
TRACTORS ON PARADE
An update from the Studios of Hereford Hospital Radio
by Chris Hughes
During the last 12 months we have had an
exciting time, bringing new radio programmes to
air presented by new volunteers who have join us.
We have been busy developing our fund raising
team, who have attended many more events in the
City. This money helps keep the station running.
We know that our station is nearly as popular as
Radio 2 at the Hospital, and with the continued
support of the Lions Club, we are available on the
internet, so patients can listen to us at home, while
they recover.
We also have an app on the Apple store for your
Iphone or Ipad, and you can down load it for free,
LIONS NEWS IN BRIEF
One of our most popular presenters Bob King
has left us recently after presenting a regular
weekly show every Thursday. Bob has a unique
ability to bring sunshine to every show, and had
many guests from far and wide to join him, to
make the show, a virtual magazine on the air.
Thanks Bob you will be missed, and we wish you
and Pat well on your journey over the border to
Scotland.

A NIGHT AT THE RACES
Tractors are a common sight on the lanes and by-ways of rural Herefordshire, but 52 vintage ones
snaking like a conga line in the countryside around Canon Frome earlier this year took even the most
hardy of locals by surprise.
It was the annual Lions Tractor Run, one of the club’s more unusual fundraisers. It also gives all those
men – and women – whose hobby is restoring classic tractors a chance to take their machines for a spin.
Organiser Mike Hughes said, “It was a great route through some delightful countryside and everyone
enjoyed the day.”

Racing may have been abandoned at Hereford Racecourse, but city punters still have the chance to lay
a bet or two on the horses – and they can do it in style while enjoying supper and drinks at the Lions
annual Racenight.
The next event is at the Shire Hall on Saturday, February 21 2015, first race at 7-30pm. A dozen or
more top class races are shown on film and racegoers get very noisy shouting for the horse they have
bet on to move faster. If you have not experienced the terrific atmosphere of Racenight why not make
up a group of family or friends and book a table. It could also be your lucky night to back a winner!!
Why not make up a table with family and friends – and enjoy a night at the races. Ring Peter
Spearpoint on 01432 358289 to book tickets..
