Danni gets mobile
thanks to The Lions
PAGE 6 • FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2015
Last Christmas Danni Clarke faced a bleak future. Paralysed by a rare brain
condition and unable to move. This Christmas the future appears much
brighter.
Not only has she now got a super off-road
pink wheelchair to get out and about with
her husband Si and four young children,
Hallie, Phoenix, Charlie and Summer Raye
but she has also recovered some movement
in her legs.
Despite a year of operations in
Birmingham and Cambridge and visits to
neurosurgeons in a bid to find the cure that
will get her back on her feet and able to
again play with her children, Danni remains
smiling and positive. Her brave response to
a crippling illness has touched the hearts of
the public who have been generous in their
support for the family whose lives took a
dramatic change. Si, who was in the third
year of a degree course at Hereford College
of Arts had to give up his studies to care for
Danni and the children at their home at
Burmarsh near Bodenham.
Mick Harman, a member of Hereford
Lions Club read about Danni’s plight in the
Hereford Times on line pages and at the
club’s welfare committee meeting that night
asked his fellow members to help make her
dream of an off-road wheelchair come true.
Some money had already come in from
members of the public, but Lions decided
the specially designed wheelchair costing
£3,300 should be ordered immediately and
the cost guaranteed by the club.
Mick Delivers
As the guy who sparked off the project,
Mick was given the happy task of playing
Santa and delivering the wheelchair to
Danni’s home in time for Christmas. One of
her first outings was to Dinmore Wood to
visit the tree planted there in memory of her
late father. A visit only made possible by the
rough terrain wheelchair. “It will make a
tremendous difference. I will be able to go
out with Si and the children on family
outings to the woods and especially to the
beach in summer. I am so grateful to everyone
for their kindness and support,” she said.
