Tracy Morriss, Civic Community Development Officer reports
In May the Hereford City Annual Parish Meeting celebrated the work and achievements of the
many community groups from within the City of Hereford through the HEREFORD CITY
COMMUNITY GROUP ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS. All the nominated volunteer groups have
worked hard to improve community areas and open spaces within the City, have delivered some
fantastic free community events and inspiring projects which have all had an impact and a benefit
to both the City and its residents. An independent panel of judges gave the £1,000 top prize to
the city’s new Core skate club. Other award winners were Belmont and Haywood Country Park
Supporters and the Model Railway Centre at Broomy Hill, Hereford in Bloom Community Open
Space award also went to Belmont and Haywood Country Park who will receive an oak tree for
the park. A highly commended award went to Putson Community Association for their Saxon Hall
project. Nominations forms for the 2016 awards should be sent to the Town Hall by the end of next March.
Mayor of Hereford presented Mayor’s Commendations to the Beefy Boys for their outstanding success in national and
international burger making competitions, including the best burger in the world title which publicised the quality of Hereford
beef, and to John Jones of Philip Morris & Co in recognition of his work in achieving Business Improvement District status for
Hereford city centre.
trusts and national funding bodies. Through the
City Council’s commitment to local groups and
its commitment to its citizens it has been possible
to provide new facilities, free community events,
improve community open spaces, create
community gardens and better equipped
community centres.
The City Council feel the views of young
people are important and are setting up a Hereford
City Youth Council to ensure young people get
their voices heard. Are you someone who would
like to see change in your area, who would like
to ensure young people get their voices heard, or
wants to influence the decision makers. If so then
why not join the Youth Council. Application
forms on www.herefordcitycouncil.gov.uk or
contact Tracy on 01432 260456.

Hereford’s Beefy Boys who have won world acclaim for their Hereford beef
burgers, received a special Mayors Commendation for bringing local food
products to global attention as champion burger makers in an international
competition in America. Now they are about to open their own ‘Beefy Boys’
burger bar in Old Market.
Hereford again won Gold in the Britain in Bloom competition, a
successful partnership between the volunteer Hereford in Bloom and the
City Council together with the support of a growing number of community
groups. Congratulations to those who gained awards in the In Your
Neighbour scheme and also to the businesses whose horticultural efforts
won awards. To get involved and improve an area around where you live,
create a community garden or improve the gardens within your school
grounds or to sign up to the ‘In Your Neighbourhood’ scheme then apply
for a COMMUNITIES IN BLOOM grant from Hereford City’s Community
