FOUNDER MEMBER OF LIONS DIES
FESTIVE NEWS • DECEMBER 2015 • PAGE 23
Howell Haines, a founder member of Hereford
Lions Club in 1960 who rose through the ranks to
be District Governor 105W, Chairman of the
Council of Governors and national treasurer,
died at his Hereford home on October 31, aged
89. He was a former partner in a firm of
chartered accountants and his financial skills
were put to good use in Lions International.
Howell remained an active member until ill
health in recent years prevented him attending
club and district conventions. He was especially
proud of his Melvin Jones Fellowship awarded
by his fellow club members. Howell will be
remembered as an expert on Lions International
Constitution and a respected mentor to new
members.
He is survived by his wife Beryl, son Ian, also
a Lion, daughter Bethan and two granddaughters.
EARNING A CHRISTMAS CRUST

award.
Festive News readers will be busy shopping for Christmas presents and stocking up with a freezer full
of festive feasting and enough booze to sink the Titanic. After all, the recession has ended. So let’s
celebrate.
But festive readers of the Hereford Times in December 1876 might not have been so enthusiastic
about the forthcoming frivolities after reading some of the reports. Thomas Wathen, a labourer from
Burghill was sentenced to 22 days hard labour in the city goal for stealing a chicken to give his family a Christmas dinner. Meanwhile, Hereford Workhouse was advertising its orphans for work at 2d
an hour. There were 83 of them in the workhouse as well as 88 men and 53 women. It cost 3s.8d a week
to keep a pauper. It was also reported that 42 vagrants had to break up six ton of stone between them
to earn a meal of dry bread.
As my old dad used to say… Those were the days!
Lions Club wishes you
all a joyous Christmas
