The first priority was a big clean-up and tidying up empty and neglected shop fronts.. Two Handymen, Chris Wood and Steve Ball are employed by BID and as well as keeping the city centre tidy will be doing a host of jobs from repairs to painting. To help them, BID has bought a mechanical ‘hoover’ to pick up litter. Council contractor, Balfour Beatty is still responsible for general street cleaning and emptying rubbish bins, but Steve and Chris will be doing the ‘deep clean’ bits. But as well as looking smarter, BID aims to make the city smarter at promoting and marketing itself to potential visitors and will be undertaking market surveys. Utilising the latest technology plays a big part in Hereford’s future, including free Wi-Fi for shoppers and a FaceWatch app which will give businesses the opportunity to share information about shoplifting and antisocial behaviour. The refurbishment of High Town and nearby streets is also on the cards. A new ‘Open for Business’ website will trumpet what Hereford offers shoppers.. The windows of empty shops are being covered by interesting photographic images.. In another welcome move, BID is jet cleaning the nightmare Eign Gate underpass. And, not forgetting the Christmas shopping bonanza … BID will be promoting Hereford as the best town in the region for festive shopping. Herefordshire Council has also just announced plans for a £2.5m refurbishment of High Town and Commercial Street, another positive move which will ensure the historic city centre will be able to compete with the Old Market development were all units are now leased.. Thankfully Its Our City set up to halt the regeneration of Hereford failed to torpedo the plans to revitalise the city’s fast declining fortune as the region’s main shopping destination. Hereford is once again a bustling city attracting thousands more shoppers. It is going to be Hectic Hereford this Christmas! Chris Wood operates the litter gulper ... four times quicker than manual cleaning. Steve Ball, the other half of the dynamic duo dedicated to keep the city centre in tip top condition.
